Seasonality in carbon chemistry of Cochin backwaters

چکیده
Seasonality in carbon chemistry of Cochin backwaters, Southern India, was investigated between 2018 and 2019. Dissolved inorganic (DIC) showed strong seasonal variations. Lowest DIC observed during the Southwest Monsoon (SWM), conjunction with low salinity surface waters, suggesting freshwater influence. The maximum concentration partial pressure dioxide water (pCO 2 w) recorded from polluted waters Vembanad Lake ( ∼ 16,000 μ atm). Excluding SWM, inner most stations (freshwater) lower pCO w levels compared outermost (estuarine) ones. With regard to sampling stations, all environmental properties, except silicate phosphate, exhibited significant variation, pointing large spatial heterogeneity across stations. Salinity a correlation dissolved within backwaters. High pH some indicates role carbonate speciation. Our study fluctuation biogeochemical parameters individual which therefore necessitates development local models for better understanding budget these waters.

Eutrophication induced changes in benthic community structure of a flow-restricted tropical estuary (Cochin backwaters), India.
The influence of anthropogenic loading on the distribution of soft bottom benthic organisms of a tropical estuary (Cochin backwaters) was examined. The industrial activities were found to be high in the northern and central part of the estuary, where dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN > 210 μM) and phosphorus (DIP > 6.5 μM) have caused high abundance of chlorophyll a (up to 73 mg m(-3)) and accu...
متن کاملSediment Oxygen Demand in Cochin backwaters, a tropical estuarine system in the south-west coast of India.
Eutrophication has often been one of the major problems encountered in estuaries and coastal waters. The oxic/anoxic status of an estuary can be effectively determined by measurement of the Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD). The present study forms a pioneering attempt to evaluate the SOD of the Cochin Backwater System (CBS), a tropical eutrophic estuary in the south-west coast of India. The CBS exh...
متن کاملToxic Metals Enrichment in the Surficial Sediments of a Eutrophic Tropical Estuary (Cochin Backwaters, Southwest Coast of India)
Concentrations and distributions of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in surficial sediments of the Cochin backwaters were studied during both monsoon and pre-monsoon periods. Spatial variations were in accordance with textural charaterstics and organic matter content. A principal component analysis distinguished three zones with different metal accumulation capacity: (i) hi...
متن کاملShort-term variability of water quality and its implications on phytoplankton production in a tropical estuary (Cochin backwaters-India).
Changes in the phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a), production rate, and species composition were studied over two seasons using the time series measurements in the northern limb of the Cochin estuary in relation to the prevailing hydrological conditions. The present study showed the significant seasonal variation in water temperature (F=69.4, P<0.01), salinity (F=341.93, P<0.01), dissolved i...
